StorySolving: Storytelling + Process Drama + Tough Topics = Positive Problem Solving
3

The Idea

Combine Storytelling + Process Drama + Tough Topics to teach positive problem solving. I want to learn How to offer this idea as a workshop for Education Departments in Universities because I've seen the positive impact in school settings when used to address Bullying. I want to do MORE!

The Plan

1. Attend National Storytelling Network Conference in June for further brainstorming and potential collaborators. (already scheduled)
2. Month long residency in Jonesborogh TN (the Capital of Storytelling in the US) to develop the idea I’ve used for bullying to incorporate other tough topics.
3. Research Stories that are effective for addressing Tough Topics, I have a repertoire for Bullying, I want to learn more.
4. Contact Education Departments at local universities to learn how they currently address tough topics such as bullying.
5. Create the workshop by combining what I’ve learned from other storytellers and educators.

How will you share your learning plan with the community?

Offer StorySolving Workshops for Education Departments at Universities to share a positive way to address difficult issues in the classroom. Offer it wherever people asked! This idea can be expanded to other communities; prisons, programs for at-risk youth, scouts, street theatre, etc.

Genius from the heart to the hearts of others. Very nicely done. Should be a part of every school district, classroom, and United Nations meeting...

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words from bullies kill some... Kristin, so glad you're taking this on seriously. Every day I watch kids clinging to the underside of the "cracks" they've been pushed through and I know it's because not enough of us stand up for them. Keep going. An honor to vote for your idea. Keep in touch. Bunny

Hey, I really like your idea to "storysolve" many of our academic institutions' pressing issues like bullying. I am De Andrea Nichols, co-founder of United Story (U/S), a social venture which uses the power of design and story as a means to address issues of diversity and social inclusion--bullying, racism, bias, understanding, etc.-- within institutions and communities, particularly those that cater to youth. Leading from my undergraduate research and senior design campaign and workshop series, The Stories Project (2008-10), I've created United Story through partnership with educator and StartingBloc fellow, Cambrie Nelson, to use my tested methodology as a consultancy for schools. We believe the data inherent in students’ stories serves as a means to equip faculty with the skills and knowledge necessary to heal and prevent issues like bullying. I would like to invite you to engage in "storysolving" our schools with U/S. As a start-up venture, Cambrie and I have already been aggressively pursuing and acquiring many sources of support for our efforts, including fellowships, pitch competitions, and academic institutions for workshopping, and grant programs. With your shared passion, we can unitedly get even more accomplished, develop new campaigns, and lead our schools to building greater inclusion through story. I would love to share more with you about U/S. Shoot me an email at deandrean@gmail.com, and I will send you some links of our work and developments. De Nichols
